Atlético Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 in Madrid derby
Atlético Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano on Sunday in the first Madrid derby of the La Liga season.
The first half ended goalless, with neither side able to create a clear advantage. The match changed early in the second half when Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was sent off after bringing down Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area.
Alejandro Grimaldo converted the resulting penalty in the 53rd minute to put Atlético ahead. Six minutes later, Jonathan David doubled the home side's lead, finishing from close range after a cross from Giuliano Simeone.
Real Madrid, despite being a man down, pulled one back in the 89th minute through Antonio Rüdiger, who headed home from Bernardo Silva's free kick. Atlético, however, held on through the final minutes to secure the derby victory.
The win moved Atlético to second in La Liga, while Real Madrid suffered their second league defeat of the season.
